Victoria to Streamline Food Safety Regulation with New Independent Body

The Victorian Government has announced a major reform to streamline food safety regulation by establishing a new independent regulator - Safe Food Victoria (https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/safe-food-victoria-help-shape-future-food-safety) . Safe Food Victoria will consolidate the functions of Dairy Food Safety Victoria, PrimeSafe, and food safety roles from the Department of Health and Agriculture Victoria, aiming to deliver consistent, high-standard regulation across the entire food supply chain.

The reform will be rolled out in two stages. Stage one will see the establishment of Safe Food Victoria by mid-2026, reporting to the Minister for Agriculture. Stage two will focus on developing a modernised legislative framework, further integrating regulatory functions and reviewing the role of local government. This transformation will reduce red tape, and ensure Victoria’s food safety system remains robust, responsive, and future-ready.

Further information, consultation on the reforms and the design of the new regulator is open via Engage Victoria until the 17th October at https://engage.vic.gov.au/foodsafety
